irk は中英語 irken に由来し、さらに古ノルド語 yrkja「働く」と結びつける説が有力です。work や overwork と同系とみると、「働いて嫌になる」感覚が「人をうんざりさせる」へ伸びた語だと分かります。
Irk comes from Middle English irken. It is often connected with Old Norse yrkja, a verb related to work or effort, and so it may belong to the same family as work. The sense seems to have moved from tiring or troublesome effort to the modern feeling of annoying or wearing someone down.
