アフリカやヨーロッパに生息する、猫に似た小型の夜行性哺乳動物。
A genet is a small wild animal with a long body, a long tail, and usually spotted fur. It looks a little like a cat, but it belongs to a different animal group. Genets are mainly found in Africa, with some also living in parts of Europe.

genet の語源・成り立ち Etymology
genet は古フランス語 genete に由来し、さらにスペイン語 gineta、アラビア語 jarnait へさかのぼる借用語。フランス語 genette やスペイン語 gineta と同系で、地中海世界で知られた細長い獣の名が、そのまま英語に入っている。
Genet came into English through Old French genete. It goes back further through Spanish gineta and probably Arabic jarnait. The name traveled across Mediterranean languages and kept referring to the same long-bodied animal as it entered English.
