list は「リスト」「一覧」という意味です。名前、物、予定などを順番に書いたものを指します。日本語の「リスト」とほぼ同じ意味で使えます。
A list is a written or displayed series of names, objects, tasks, or other items, usually arranged one after another for reference or organization.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
日本語の「リスト」とほぼ同じだが、英語では make a shopping list（買い物一覧を作る）、be on the list（名簿に載っている）、check the list（一覧を確認する）の形で覚えると実用的。項目を一列に並べたものを指し、動詞では「列挙する」の意味にもなる。
Read `not always` as one chunk. It is not as strong as `never`; it means there are exceptions. Use it to soften a general statement: something is true often, but not every time.

古英語 liste（布の縁、帯）からイタリア語 lista（帯状の記録）を経て「一覧表」の意味に発展。語根はゲルマン祖語 *līstō（縁、境界線）。関連語：enlist（名簿に載せる→入隊する）。帯状に項目を並べて書き留めたことから「リスト」になった。
Not is a shortened form from Old English negative expressions meaning "nothing" or "not at all." Always comes from Old English ealne weg, literally "all the way," which came to mean "at all times." So not always developed as a partial negative: not in every case, rather than never. This is why it contrasts with stronger negatives like never.
