gadget は19世紀の船乗り言葉で、『名前の出ない小さな道具』を指した語です。おそらくフランス語 gâchette「機械の引き金・留め具」にさかのぼり、『細かな仕掛け部品』の感覚から便利な小型機器の意味へ広がり、関連語に gadgetry と gadgeteer があります。
Gadget appeared in the 19th century as a sailors' word for a small tool or device whose exact name was not known or not important.
