multiple はラテン語 multiplex に由来し、multi-「多く」と -plex「折り重なった」から成ります。つまり原義は「何重にも折られた」で、multiply や complex も同じ plic 系の仲間です。単に数が多いだけでなく、層や重なりのある複数性が感じられます。
Multiple comes from Latin multiplex, from multi- meaning "many" and -plex meaning "folded" or "woven." Its earliest sense was something with many folds or layers, not just a large number. That idea of parts being folded together is also seen in related words like multiply and complex.
