先住民イロコイ語の kanata（村・集落）に由来。16世紀にフランス人探検家カルティエが現地の人からこの語を聞き、地域全体の名称として使った。最初は小さな集落を指す言葉が、やがて広大な国の名前になったという壮大なスケール変化が興味深い。
Canada comes from kanata, an Indigenous Iroquoian word meaning "village" or "settlement." In the 16th century, French explorer Jacques Cartier heard the word and used it for the surrounding region. A name that first referred to a local settlement gradually became the name of a much larger land and then the country.
