覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
都市名なので Ottawa と大文字で書き、Ottawa is the capital of Canada を一まとまりで覚える。カナダのオンタリオ州にある政治・行政の中心で、live in Ottawa、visit Ottawa のように通常は冠詞なしで使う。名称は交易に関係する先住民の名に由来する。
Fix Ottawa in memory with the complete fact Ottawa is the capital of Canada. It is a city in Ontario and the center of Canada’s federal government, so government, Parliament, and national administration are useful associations. Because Ottawa is a proper place name, capitalize it and normally use no article: live in Ottawa, travel to Ottawa, or visit Ottawa. Its historical connection with an Indigenous name associated with trade also suits the city’s position on an important river and earlier trading route.

ottawa の語源・成り立ち Etymology
カナダの首都名。先住民アルゴンキン語族オタワ族の名に由来し、adawe(交易する)が語源。毛皮交易の仲介者として知られた部族名がそのまま地名になった。交易の要衝としての歴史が名前に刻まれている。
The city’s name comes from the Ottawa River, whose name is associated with the Ottawa, or Odawa, people. Their name is commonly linked to an Algonquian verb meaning “to trade,” reflecting their historical role in regional trade networks. The settlement was earlier called Bytown, but it was renamed Ottawa in the nineteenth century. The Indigenous-derived river name thus became the name of Canada’s capital.
