The city’s name comes from the Ottawa River, whose name is associated with the Ottawa, or Odawa, people. Their name is commonly linked to an Algonquian verb meaning “to trade,” reflecting their historical role in regional trade networks. The settlement was earlier called Bytown, but it was renamed Ottawa in the nineteenth century. The Indigenous-derived river name thus became the name of Canada’s capital.
