multiple を知っていれば軸はつかみやすい語です。multiple が「複数の」で、multiplicity はその状態を名詞にした「多くのものが並立していること」。many より硬く、単なる数の多さよりも、要素・立場・原因がいくつも共存する感じを出せます。a multiplicity of reasons/problems の形で「多くの〜」と出やすいので、かたまりで覚えると強いです。diversity が「違いの豊かさ」を強調しやすいのに対し、multiplicity は「一つでは済まない複数性」に意識が向く語だと整理すると混同しにくいです。

multiplicity はラテン語 multiplicitas 由来で、multi-「多く」+ plicare「折る」から成る multiplex「幾重にも折られた」が元です。ひとつが何重にも分かれ増えているイメージから、「多重性・多数」という意味になります。関連語は multiple, imply。
Multiplicity comes from Latin multiplicitas. It is related to multiplex, made from multi- "many" and a root linked to folding, so the early idea was something "many-layered" or "folded many times."
