生物学や遺伝学で、同じ種の集団内や同じ遺伝子座に、複数の異なる形質や型が存在することを指す。外見の違いだけでなくDNA配列の違いにも用いられ、進化、適応、個体差の理解に重要な概念である。

poly- を見たら「複数」を連想し、polygon（多角形）や polyglot（多言語話者）と同じ仲間だと押さえる。morph は metamorphosis や morphology の「形・姿」。つまり polymorphism は「一つのものが many forms をとる」感覚で覚えるとよい。生物では同じ種・同じ遺伝子座に複数の型があること、IT での polymorphism も「同じでも形や振る舞いが変わる」ので同じ核イメージで結びつく。
`Poly-` means many, and `morph` means form or shape. So `polymorphism` gives the picture of one thing showing many forms. That same core image works in both biology and IT, which makes the word easier to keep.
