A polyglot is a person who can speak several languages. The word is used for people with strong ability in more than two languages. It can also sometimes describe books or texts written in several languages.

まず bilingual（2言語話者）を基準にすると覚えやすいです。bi- が「2」なら、poly- は「多い」。つまり polyglot は「2つどころか、いくつもの言語を使える人」。意味の中心は“語学が得意”より“複数言語を実際に話せる”ことです。multilingual と近いですが、polyglot はとくに人を指して「何か国語も操る人」という響きが強め。a famous polyglot, a natural polyglot のような形で覚えると定着します。

polyglot はギリシャ語 poly-「多くの」と glotta/glossa「舌・言語」から成る。昔は「舌」がそのまま「ことば」を表したので、「多くの舌をもつ人」が多言語話者になるわけで、発想の古さがかえって印象に残る。関連語は polygon、glossary。
