polyglot の語源・成り立ち Etymology
polyglot はギリシャ語 poly-「多くの」と glotta/glossa「舌・言語」から成る。昔は「舌」がそのまま「ことば」を表したので、「多くの舌をもつ人」が多言語話者になるわけで、発想の古さがかえって印象に残る。関連語は polygon、glossary。
Polyglot comes from Greek poly-, meaning many, and glossa or glotta, meaning tongue or language. In ancient thought, the tongue often stood for speech itself. So the word moved from the idea of having many tongues to using many languages.
