depositary は deposit に -ary が付いた語で、語源はラテン語 deponere「置く」です。de-「下へ」+ ponere「置く」なので、『預ける』は本来『そこへ置く』感覚でした。だから depositary は預かって保持する人で、position も同じ語根です。
Depositary was formed from deposit with the suffix -ary. Deposit goes back to Latin deponere, meaning "to put down," from de- "down" + ponere "to put." The idea was first of placing something somewhere, and then of leaving it in another person's care. Related English words include position and compose, from the same Latin root.
