dibは主に dibs の形で「先取り権」を表し、子どもの遊び dibstones の短縮形です。dibstone の dib は古語 dib「ちょんとたたく」で dab と同系とされ、小石を先に扱う遊びの名から「先手の権利」へ広がったと考えると納得しやすいです。
Dib is mainly known in the plural form dibs, and it seems to come from dibstones, the name of a children's game. The older dib probably meant a light tap or dab, and it is related in feeling to dab.
