memorise は memory と同系で、ラテン語 memor「心に留める」から出た memoria に由来し、-ise で「そうする」が加わった語です。memory や memorial も同根で、ただ覚えるのでなく「心の中にとどめる」と捉えると意味が深まります。
Memorise comes from memory, with the verb ending -ise added to mean "make into" or "cause to be." Its root goes back to Latin memor and memoria, meaning "mindful" or "remembering," which also gave English memory and memorial.
