scuttle には二系統あり、走る意味は古ノルド語系の「せかせか動く」に通じ、自沈する意味は古フランス語由来の船の scuttle「開口部・穴」から出ました。scuttled や scuttlebutt が関連し、同じ綴りでも「ちょこまか動く」と「穴を開けて沈める」が別史だとわかります。
Scuttling comes from scuttle + -ing, but scuttle has two different histories. One sense, "to move quickly," is probably from a Scandinavian source linked to hurried movement, while the ship sense comes from scuttle meaning an opening or hatch, from Old French. Because of that, scuttle could develop both the idea of rushing about and the idea of sinking a ship by cutting holes in it.
