heartは古英語heorteから。古代ヨーロッパでは心臓が記憶・知性の座と考えられており、「心に刻む＝暗記する」となった。フランス語par cœur（心によって）も同じ発想。cordial（心からの）も同語根のラテン語cor由来。
Heart comes from Old English heorte. In older European thought, the heart was seen as the seat of memory, thought, and feeling, not only emotion. So learn by heart meant to fix something in the heart, and from there it came to mean memorizing exactly. A similar idea appears in French par coeur, and related words from the Latin root cor include cordial.
