If you know something by heart, you have memorized it completely and can say it without looking at it. This expression is often used for poems, speeches, rules, or song lyrics. It usually suggests careful practice or repeated learning.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
by heart は「心の中に入っていて、見なくてもそのまま出せる」状態として覚えると定着します。learn/know by heart の形でよく出て、詩・セリフ・歌詞・定義などを丸ごと言える場面に使われます。memorize が「覚える動作」なら、by heart は「もう完全に入っている状態」に近いのがポイント。from memory と似ていますが、by heart のほうが暗唱できるほど確実、という印象です。by hand, by chance などの by＋名詞 のまとまりで覚えると混乱しにくいです。

heart は古英語 heorte 由来で、心臓が感情だけでなく記憶の座とも考えられた時代の語です。by heart は「心の中に入れて」の感覚から「暗記して」。cardiac, cordial は遠い同根語です。
