cancellation はラテン語 cancellare「格子線で消す」由来で、cancell- は cancelli「格子」、-ation は動作名詞です。文字を消すとき格子状の線を引いたことから、中止でなく“線を引いて効力を消す”感覚が残ります。関連語は cancel, chancel です。
Cancellation comes from Latin cancellare, which meant to cross out with lines, from cancelli, meaning a lattice or grating. The image was of drawing lines over writing to make it invalid.
