木材や氷、ガラスなどが力や圧力によって細い破片に裂けたり、ぱきぱきと細かく割れたりしている進行中の状態を表す。比喩的には、政党や組織などが意見の対立のためにまとまりを失い、複数の集団へ分裂していくことにも使う。
