splintは中低地ドイツ語splinte「薄い金属片」に由来し、さらに「裂く」を表すゲルマン系の語根にさかのぼります。splinterやspliceも同根で、芯は「細く裂いた片」。だから添え木のsplintも、もとは「裂いて作った細片」なのです。
Splint comes from Middle Low German splinte, meaning a thin strip or piece, and it goes back to a Germanic root meaning "to split." Related English words include splinter and possibly splice.
