spline は18世紀の東アングリア方言に現れた語で、古デンマーク語 splind や北フリジア語 splinj に結びつけられ、splinter と同系と考えられます。原感覚は『細く裂けた木片』で、そこから継ぎ材や機械のキー、さらに数学の滑らかな曲線名へ広がりました。関連語は splinter, split。
Spline appeared in an East Anglian dialect in the 18th century. It is linked to North Sea Germanic words such as Old Danish splind and North Frisian splinj, and it is probably related to splinter.
