A linguist is a person who studies language scientifically, including its sounds, structure, and history. The word can also sometimes mean someone who is skilled at learning or using languages. In academic contexts, it usually means a language researcher.

linguist は bilingual や multilingual の lingui- と同じ「language 系」の仲間として覚えると残りやすい。-ist は scientist, artist などと同じで「その分野の人」。だから「ことばを専門に見る人」という形で取れる。大事なのは、単に多言語を話せる polyglot ではなく、文法・音声・語の変化を研究する学者寄りの語だという点。a famous linguist, become a linguist, study linguistics のまとまりで触れると定着しやすい。
Notice the `lingui-` part, the same family as `bilingual` and `linguistics`. Then add `-ist`, the ending for a person in a field, like `artist` or `scientist`. That makes it easier to remember as a language specialist, not just someone who speaks many languages.
