二つの言語に関する、または二つの言語を使えることを表す形容詞。人については二言語で話したり理解したりできる力があることを示し、家庭、教育、辞書などについては二言語が日常的または制度的に用いられている状態を表します。
Bilingual describes a person who can use two languages, or something that involves two languages. It is often used for people, schools, education, signs, or documents. The word does not always mean both languages are used at exactly the same level.

まず bi- を見たら「2」を思い出す習慣をつけると、bicycle, bilateral と同じ型で覚えやすいです。後半の lingual は language, linguist, multilingual の仲間で「言語」系。つまり bilingual は「2つの言語をあやつる」。monolingual（1言語だけ）や multilingual（多言語）と並べると定着します。bilingual education, a bilingual dictionary のように、人だけでなく教育・辞書・家庭環境にも使える点を押さえると実戦で迷いません。なお「流暢」や「母語話者」とは別概念です。
