espionageはフランス語espionnageから入った語で、espion「スパイ」が核にある。語幹spi-は「見る・見張る」に結びつき、-ageは行為を表し、spyやespialも同根。つまり語源的には「ひそかに見ること」そのものがスパイ行為なのである。
