名詞の spy は「秘密の情報を取る人」と人に固定して覚えると定着しやすいです。動詞 spy on ... は「こっそり監視する」ですが、この行ではその行為をする人物、つまり正体を隠して文書や機密を集め、他国や別組織に渡す人を指します。detective は犯罪を調べる探偵、informant は情報提供者、spy は“内部にもぐって秘密を集める人”。a spy / arrest a spy のように数えられる名詞として押さえると、動詞の監視行為と切り分けられます。
Picture someone using a false identity to collect secret documents for another organization. Learn 'a spy' and 'arrest a spy' to remember that this entry names a countable person.

見つける
(意味 2)
解説 Definition
遠くにいる人や物にふと気づき、見つけるという意味の動詞。やや物語的で描写向きの言い方で、景色の中から何かを見分けた場面によく合う。『スパイ活動をする』とは別の意味。
To suddenly notice someone or something, especially at a distance or among many other things. This slightly literary verb suits descriptions of picking out a figure or object in a scene.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
動詞 spy には「スパイ活動をする」だけでなく、景色や群衆の中に何かをふと見つける意味があります。I spied a deer なら「鹿をこっそり監視した」ではなく、「遠くに鹿の姿を見つけた」。spot に近いですが、spy は少し物語的で、目を凝らして見分ける感じが出ます。spy on ... と前置詞 on が続けば監視、spy a person / object と直接目的語なら「見つける」と切り分けると覚えやすいです。
Picture looking across a valley and suddenly noticing a deer: you spy it among the trees. Remember the pattern 'spy + person or thing' for this meaning, which is close to spot and has a storytelling feel.
例文
I spied a deer near the river.
私は川の近くで鹿を見つけた。
She spied her friend in the crowd.
彼女は群衆の中に友人を見つけた。
We finally spied the village from the hill.
私たちは丘の上からようやく村を見つけた。

spy の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古フランス語 espier(ひそかに見る)から中英語に入った語で、さらにゲルマン祖語 *spehōn(見張る)に由来する。同根語に espionage(スパイ活動)がある。「こっそり見る・探る」という行為から、そのように秘密情報を集める人物、つまり名詞の spy「スパイ」の意味が発展した。
The word came into Middle English from Old French espier, meaning to watch secretly, with an earlier Germanic root meaning to watch. The name for the person developed from the activity of secretly gathering information.
