古英語 dēor（動物全般）に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 *deuzą が起源。元来は「野生動物」を広く指す語だったが、中英語期にイギリスで狩猟対象として鹿が最も身近だったため、意味が「鹿」に限定された。関連語: wilderness（荒野＝wild + dēor + ness）。意味の縮小が起きた典型例である。
