gazelle はフランス語 gazelle を経て、最終的にアラビア語 ghazāl「ガゼル」から入った語です。北アフリカや西アジアの、細くすばやかに跳ねる動物名がそのまま英語化したもので、フランス語 gazelle やスペイン語 gacela が近縁です。
Gazelle came into English through French gazelle, ultimately from Arabic ghazal or ghazal-like forms meaning the animal. The word was borrowed along with the name of the animal known in North Africa and western Asia. Its meaning stayed very close to the original, simply becoming the English form of that animal name; related forms appear in French and Spanish.
