シマウマとは、アフリカに生息する白と黒の縞模様が特徴的な草食動物です。ウマ科に属し、外見は馬に似ていますが、縞模様によって個体の識別ができると言われています。縞模様は天敵から身を守るカモフラージュの役割を果たしているという説もあります。
