古英語 heorot（雄鹿、特に成体の雄鹿）が語源。ゲルマン祖語 *herutaz に遡り、ラテン語 cervus（鹿）とも印欧祖語で同根とされます。Hartford（鹿の渡し場）にも残るように、もともと心臓ではなく、狩猟や文学に出る力強い雄鹿を指す語です。
