すなわち

前に述べた内容を具体的に言い換えたり、対象をはっきり特定したりするときに使う副詞。日本語の「すなわち」「具体的には」に近く、抽象的な表現のあとに、その中身・例・人名などを続けて示す場面で用いられる。

古英語 namelīce（名指しで）に由来し、name（名前）+ -ly（副詞接尾辞）の構成。ゲルマン祖語 *namō（名前）が語根。関連語: name, nominate（ラテン語同源）。「名前を挙げて言えば」が原義で、そこから「すなわち・つまり」と具体的に言い換える意味になった。
