ラテン語 notāre（印をつける、注目する）から派生した notābilis が語源。語根 not-（知る、記す）に形容詞接尾辞 -able が付き「注目に値する」の意。関連語は note, notify。人に「印がつく」ほど目立つ存在、という原義から「著名な」の意味になった。
