古英語 bæcweard は bæc（背中・後ろ）+ -weard（方向を示す接尾辞）の合成語。-weard はラテン語 vertere（向く）と同源。関連語: forward（前方へ）、toward（〜の方へ）。「背中の方向へ」が原義で、-s は副詞化の接尾辞として後に付加された。
