ラテン語 suspicere（下から見上げる）から。sub-（下から）＋ specere（見る）で「こっそり下から窺い見る」が原義。同根語に suspect（疑う）や spectacle（見もの）がある。人を下から探るように見る行為が「疑い」の意味に発展した。
Suspicious comes from Latin suspicere, built from sub- "from below" and specere "to look." The original image was of looking up from underneath or watching in a secret, careful way. That sense of examining someone closely grew into the idea of doubt and mistrust. It shares its root with suspect and spectacle.
