人や話を簡単には信用せず、相手の言動に疑いの目を向ける様子を表す形容詞です。過去の経験や不安から警戒心が強く、説明を受けてもすぐには信じない態度や性格について使われます。一時的な反応にも、もともとの気質にも使えます。
Distrusting describes someone who does not easily believe or rely on other people. It is used for attitudes, feelings, or behavior when a person expects dishonesty, danger, or hidden motives.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
trust を知っていれば覚えやすい語です。dis- が付くと「反対・離れる」ので、distrusting は「trust しない、信用を引っ込めた状態」。ただの not trusting より、相手の言葉や態度を最初から少し警戒して受け取る感じが強めです。trusting が「人をわりと信じる」、gullible が「だまされやすい」なら、その反対側に置くと記憶しやすいです。a distrusting look, be distrusting of strangers のような形で、人柄や視線、態度と結び付けて覚えると残ります。
Build it from trust. The prefix dis- gives a negative idea, so distrusting means not ready to trust. Remember it beside trusting and gullible: a distrusting person stands on the opposite side and stays cautious from the start.
