Unsuspected means not known, noticed, or expected before. It is used for things that are hidden, surprising, or only discovered later. The word often suggests that people had no reason to think it existed.

unsuspected は un- + suspected で、suspect はラテン語 suspicere「下から見る・こっそり見る」に由来します。そこから「怪しいと目をつける」が生まれ、inspect や spectator と同じ spec「見る」を知ると、思いがけなさの感触がつかめます。
Unsuspected is made from un- and suspected. Suspect comes from Latin suspicere, literally "to look from below" or "look up at," and later "to look at distrustfully."
