eland はオランダ語 eland「ヘラジカ」に由来し、ゲルマン祖語系の語です。接頭辞分解はなく、入植者が大型の草食獣を見て既知の elk と同根語を当てたもの。だから「エランド」は“アフリカのヘラジカっぽい獣”という感覚で名づけられました。
`Eland` came into English from Dutch `eland`, a Germanic word that originally referred to the elk or moose. European settlers used a familiar animal name for a large African grazing animal that seemed similar in size or shape. So the English word keeps the sense of an "elk-like" creature, even though it names a different animal.
