古い英語で使われた二人称単数の代名詞で、現代英語の you にあたります。現在の日常会話ではほとんど用いられず、聖書、祈り、詩、歴史劇などで古風で荘重な響きを出すために使われる語です。
An old word meaning "you" when speaking to one person. It appears in old literature, religious texts, and historical language, but it is not used in normal modern English. Learners mainly need to recognize it, not use it in daily conversation.

thou は単独で暗記するより、古い二人称セットでまとめると残りやすい。thou=主語「あなたは」、thee=目的語「あなたを」、thy=「あなたの」。現代英語の you の昔の単数形で、日常会話ではほぼ出ません。だから本文で見たら意味を細かく迷うより、『聖書・祈り・シェイクスピア風の古めかしい you』と即判定するのがコツ。特に Thou shalt ... の型は「汝…すべし」という戒め・荘重な響きと結びつけると記憶に残ります。though と綴りが近いので混同注意。
Remember `thou` as an old-fashioned form of `you`, not a normal modern word. It is easier to learn with its old family: `thou`, `thee`, `thy`. When you see it, think of the Bible, prayers, or Shakespeare-style English, and do not confuse it with `though`.

古英語 þū（汝）から。印欧祖語 *tú に遡り、ラテン語 tū、ドイツ語 du、フランス語 tu と同根。英語では近世に you が丁寧形として広まり、thou は廃れたが、聖書や詩では「親しい二人称」として残存する。
Thou comes from Old English thu and goes back to a very old Indo-European root also seen in Latin tu, German du, and French tu. It was once the normal singular word for "you." Later, English shifted toward you in most situations, so thou survived mainly in religion, poetry, and old-fashioned or very intimate speech.
