glossary は中英語を経て、中世ラテン語 glossarium「注釈語集」から入った語です。核の gloss- はギリシャ語 glossa「舌・言語・難語」で、-ary は「集めたもの」を表します。gloss や glossolalia と同根で、もとは「説明の要る語の一覧」だったから今の「用語集」になりました。
Glossary came into English through Medieval Latin glossarium, meaning a collection of explanations of difficult words. Its root is Greek glossa, meaning "tongue," "language," or "unfamiliar word." So the word first meant a list of words needing explanation, and later became the modern sense of a word list with meanings. Related English words include gloss and glossolalia.
