絶対に間違いを犯さないという性質。特にローマ教皇の教義上の無謬性を指すことが多い。
Infallibility is the quality of always being correct and never making mistakes. It is often used when talking about beliefs, authority, or systems that are claimed to be impossible to prove wrong. In real use, the word may sound formal or critical because perfect correctness is rare.

infallibility は中世ラテン語 infallibilitas に由来し、in-「否定」+ fallibilis「誤りうる」+ -ity「性質」に分けられます。fallibilis はラテン語 fallere「だます・誤らせる」にさかのぼるので、「誤りに陥らない性質」から無謬性の意味になります。関連語は infallible, fallible です。
Infallibility comes from Medieval Latin infallibilitas. It is built from in- meaning "not," fallibilis meaning "liable to err," and -ity for a quality or state; fallibilis comes from Latin fallere, "to deceive" or "cause to err." So the word originally meant the state of not being capable of error. Related words are fallible and infallible.
