Deceleration is the process of slowing down. It is often used in physics, driving, transportation, and economics to describe a reduction in speed, rate, or growth. In everyday use, it usually refers to movement becoming slower.

accelerate（加速する）を知っていれば、deceleration はその逆方向の名詞だと覚えやすいです。de- が「下げる・反対向き」の感覚を加え、accelerate → decelerate → deceleration と形が変わるだけ。車や飛行機が speed down する場面、急ブレーキによる sudden deceleration を思い浮かべると定着します。acceleration（加速）と対で覚えると、意味も品詞も整理しやすく、混同を防げます。

deceleration の語源・成り立ち Etymology
decelerationはラテン語de-「下へ・離れて」＋celer「速い」に由来します。celerityやaccelerateも同じ語根で、de-が勢いを引き下げるので、「速さを落とすこと」がそのまま減速になる語です。
Deceleration comes from de- + a form based on Latin celer, meaning "swift." The root also appears in celerity and accelerate. With de- adding the sense of reduction or moving downward, the word developed to mean the process of becoming slower. Its history is closely tied to the language of motion and speed.
