「speed」は古英語 spedan／sped「成功・はかどり」に由来し、もとは単なる速さでなく『物事がうまく進むこと』を表した。speedy や Godspeed も同根で、速いほど前進が順調だという感覚から、今の『スピードを出す』の意味へ伸びた。
