A speedometer is a device in a vehicle that shows how fast the vehicle is moving. It is usually found on the dashboard of a car, motorcycle, or other machine used for travel. The speed is normally shown in miles per hour or kilometres per hour.

speed が分かれば中心は「速さ」。後半の -meter は thermometer, barometer, meter などと同じで「測る計器」とまとめて覚えると、speedometer はそのまま「速さを測る計器」と読める。車の dashboard で current speed を示す場面、check the speedometer / watch the speedometer のような使い方と結びつけると定着しやすい。似た形の odometer は走行距離計なので、「speedometer は今の速度、odometer は積み上がった距離」と対比して覚えると混同しにくい。
