An odometer is a device in a vehicle that shows how far it has traveled. It usually measures the total distance in kilometers or miles. The word is common in driving, car sales, and vehicle maintenance.

meter が「測る計器」だと分かれば、speedometer（速度計）や thermometer（温度計）と同じ仲間として覚えやすい語です。車で見る場面では、speedometer が「今この瞬間の速さ」、odometer が「これまで積み上がった総走行距離」を示すと対比すると定着します。ダッシュボードで中古車の距離確認をするときに見る数字、という場面で結びつけるのも有効。trip meter は区間ごとにリセットできるが、odometer は累計距離、という違いもセットで押さえると混同しにくいです。

odometer はフランス語経由の学術語で、ギリシャ語 hodos「道」+ metron「測るもの」からできています。つまり「道の長さを測る器械」という成り立ちで、走った距離を数える装置という意味がそのまま見えます。method, meter が同系です。
Odometer is a learned word built from Greek hodos "way, road" and metron "measure." It came into English through French and other scientific use in Europe.
