altimeter は altitude（高度）+ meter（計器・測るもの）で見ると覚えやすい。speedometer, thermometer, barometer と同じく、語尾 -meter が付けば「何かを測る機械」。前半の alti- は altitude と結びつけて「高さ」の感覚を固定する。aircraft altimeter の形で出やすく、飛行機で speed ではなく height を確認し、安全な altitude を保つための計器だと押さえると、似た計器名と混同しにくい。
