levitate はラテン語 levis「軽い」に由来し、levit- に動詞語尾 -ate が付いた語です。発想の芯は「上へ飛ぶ」よりまず「軽くなって浮く」で、重さが消える感覚が意味を支えています。levity や alleviate も同根で、「軽さ」が共通のイメージです。
Levitate comes from a root based on Latin levis, meaning "light" in weight. The verb ending -ate was added to form a word meaning, in effect, "to become light" or "to make light." From that idea, the meaning developed into rising or floating in the air; levity and alleviate come from the same root.
