shallは古英語scealに由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語*skal-「負う・義務がある」に連なります。shouldやドイツ語sollenも同根で、未来を表す語なのに硬さがあるのは、もともと「そうすることになっている」という義務の感覚から育ったからです。
"Shall" comes from Old English "sceal," from a Germanic root meaning "to owe" or "to be under obligation." It is related to "should" and to German "sollen." Because of that origin, it first had a strong sense of duty or necessity, and only later also became a marker of future time.
