wife は古英語 wif「女・女性」にさかのぼり、もとは今より広く「女性一般」を指した古い語です。midwife や housewife にその語幹が残ります。意味が「妻」にしぼられた結果、英語では家庭内の役割を強く帯びる語になったとわかります。
"Wife" comes from Old English "wif," which originally meant "woman" more generally, not only "married woman." You can still see this older sense in compounds like "midwife" and "housewife." Over time, the meaning became narrower and settled on the modern sense of "married woman."
