thirty は古英語 þritig からで、three + -ty（古くは「10のまとまり」）の組み合わせです。three や thirteen と同じ語根をもち、直訳すれば「3つの十」なので、30が three tens として作られた語だと見えてきます。
Thirty comes from Old English thritig. It is built from the same base as three plus an old ending meaning "group of ten." So the word originally meant "three tens," like thirteen and thirty both built from the root of three.
