古英語の `þritigoða` にさかのぼる語で、`thirty`（30）に序数を作る `-th` が付いた形です。`thirty` は古英語で「three＋10のまとまり」を表し、`three` と同根。つまり「三十を順番で数えた形」なので30番目になります。
