古英語の mid「〜と共に」＋ wif「女性」にさかのぼり、もとは「出産する女性のそばにいる人」という意味です。wife は本来「妻」より広く女性一般を指し、midway などの mid と同じ発想なので、「母親に付き添う人」から助産師の意味になりました。
"Midwife" comes from Old English "mid," meaning "with," and "wif," meaning "woman." So the original idea was a woman who is with another woman during childbirth. Later the word became the fixed term for a birth attendant. The first part is related to "mid" in the older sense of "with," not the modern sense of "middle."
