husband は古ノルド語 husbondi に由来し、hus「家」+ bondi「住む者・家の主人」に分けられます。house や husbandry と並べると、もともとは単なる配偶者でなく「家を預かる人」で、そこから現代の『夫』に定着したと分かります。
"Husband" comes from Old Norse husbondi, made from hus "house" and bondi "dweller" or "master of the house." At first it meant the man in charge of a household rather than simply a married man. This older sense also appears in "husbandry," which is about managing a home, land, or resources.
